PCD Artist Project 2020: That’s a Wrap

What started as a vague idea to use works of art from PCD artists to raise PCD (primary ciliary dyskinesia) awareness and help fund the PCD Smiles program at the same time coupled with the help of PCD community members turned into a smashing success. As the figures started rolling in each week from the social media shares, the social media engagements, our website statistics, our donations, and our merchandise sales I grew increasingly thankful for this year’s group of artists who submitted works to the first annual PCD Artist Project. Without them the project would not have been possible. So I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank each and every artist who participated in 2020. With their talents I’m am happy to report that we’ve raised $2,200 and counting for the PCD Smiles program. Exhibit merchandise for the PCD Artist Project 2020 will be available for purchase through at least September 2021. We hope that you enjoy our video presentation of the 2020 exhibit.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a term that refers to genetic (inherited) disorders of cilia. Cilia are microscopic, whip-like organelles (little organs) that line the upper and lower respiratory tract, including nasal passages, sinuses, lungs, ear tubes, reproductive organs and the ventricles of the brain.
Cilia, together with airway mucus, provide the first line of defense for the airways, maintaining healthy airway tissue. This important biological system is known as “mucociliary clearance.” Defects of mucociliary clearance can lead to recurrent ear and sinus infections, pneumonia and other pulmonary diseases. Cystic fibrosis is an example of another genetic disorder of mucociliary clearance that shares many features with PCD. ~ Children’s Health

The PCD Artist Project is a collaborative effort by artist to raise awareness for PCD or primary ciliary dyskinesia and support the PCD Smiles program. Each artist who submitted art work to the project either has PCD or has a PCD friend or family member.

The PCD Artist Project’s 2020 exhibition merchandise ranges from apparel, giftware, home furnishings, and printed products such as posters, prints, wall art, and other items, all created from our exhibition; which can be viewed on PCD Smiles’s website. Disease Management
There is no cure for PCD. Management is focused on symptom relief and slowing the progression of lung damage. Daily interventions include airway clearance and aggressive treatment of respiratory inflammation and infection in the upper and lower respiratory tract. More strenuous intervention is required for disease exacerbations (flare ups). The use of IV or inhaled antibiotics and supplemental oxygen may be required for acute symptoms. Today’s featured photographer is Katlynn Wilson with her submission titled, “Fleeting”.

When certain genetic defects of motile cilia are present, organ placement becomes a random event. This means if you have PCD, there are three possible ways your organs can present–completely normal left-right patterning (situs solitus), completely reversed in a mirror-image fashion (situs inversus totalis or ‘situs inversus’) or something in-between (situs ambiguus or heterotaxy). This is because organ placement is partially determined by the activity of special motile cilia during embryonic development. When these cilia don’t move, the process that tells the body how to differentiate right from left can be disrupted. This happens randomly with each pregnancy. In the same family, it is possible to have one child with normal situs, one with situs inversus and one with heterotaxy–all with the same genetic defect that causes PCD. ~ https://pcdfoundation.org/pcd-terminology/

Today’s featured artist is Kathy McGee McRight with her submission titled, “Beach Day”.

A small percentage of affected people (with PCD) do not have situs solitus or situs inversus totalis, but have organ placement that is between normal and mirror image. This is called situs ambiguus—or heterotaxy if there are also serious heart defects. Situs ambiguus can affect only the organs in the chest, only those in the abdomen, or organs in both. It can be mild or severe and may result in additional health issues for people with PCD. Congenital heart defects (CHD) are 200 times more common in PCD patients with situs ambiguus or heterotaxy. ~ American Thoracic Society
