Breathing treatments and airway clearance times do not have to be old and boring. In fact the experts agree, the best airway clearance technique for primary ciliary dyskinesia is the one that the individual patient will actual do. Because if you aren’t doing them, then they aren’t doing any good for anyone. One over looked airway clearance technique is play and laughter. Did you know physical activity triggers enzymes in the body that naturally open or bronchodilator the airways. Open airway give our non-moving mucus extra room to move which makes it easier to cough out. Laughter then causes vibration and boom, you’ve got your mucus on the move.

Come on who hasn’t gotten choked up in a tickle session while playing and coughed out a whole bunch of mucus? My family, when I was little was told not to get me so worked up that I ended up in coughing fits and coughed out a lung. That was forty years ago. And the was exactly the WRONG advice for mobilizing secretions in primary ciliary dyskinesia. Get coughing, get clearing those airways. Trust me you don’t want bronchiectasis any sooner than you have to have it. Try tickle sessions, get those natural enzymes moving to open your airways, and then take full advantage of it to clear your lungs. Get laughing, and get coughing.
