Random Fact Friday
*Studies of drugs like L-arginine which can directly improve, or at least increase (it's not clear that just moving faster necessarily improves function/clearance), ciliary function have not been particularly successful in PCD. This is because the genetic variants that cause PCD result in missing proteins that are required to form structural/functional cilia. In PCD, using these drugs is a bit like putting premium gasoline into a car with a broken or missing axle. You'd be able to rev the engine better, but you still won't be going anywhere until the structural problem with the car is fixed--this is why there is so much interest in gene-based therapies for PCD right now.” ~ United States PCD Foundation
