“Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare disease in which the cilia that clear mucus in the respiratory system and move fluids in the inner ear do not function effectively. Because it is rare and has symptoms that mimic allergies, asthma and reflux, patients with PCD are often mistakenly diagnosed. Those early misdiagnoses tend to stick, despite a worsening condition.” ~ Michael O’Connor, M.D.

“Ciliary activity is also responsible for organ placement in the developing embryo. When ciliary function is impaired, congenital defects of the structure and/or placement of internal organs may occur. Complete reversal of the organs, a condition called situs inversus totalis, occurs in approximately 50% of all PCD patients. Heterotaxy and situs ambiguus (‘ambiguous’), where organ laterality is interrupted, may also occur. Polysplenia (multiple spleens), asplenia (no spleen), congenital heart defects, vascular abnormalities and cystic lesions in the kidneys, spleen, liver or pancreas, may all be seen in PCD with heterotaxy/situsambiguus.” ~ The American PCD Foundation

“At the time of diagnosis with PCD, many individuals are told that they will be infertile (males) or sub-fertile with a higher risk of ectopic/tubal pregnancy (females). It turns out that these long-standing beliefs are not entirely accurate. We still have a lot to learn about infertility issues in PCD, but as we learn more about PCD genetics it appears that infertility in PCD may be related  to genetic profile—with some genetic variants more likely to result in infertility/subfertility. As we learn more about PCD genetics, it appears that some of the ‘conventional wisdom’ about PCD infertility may need to be reconsidered.” ~ The American PCD Foundation

“PCD has been first described in 1936, and the first causative gene has been reported in 1999. Since that time, PCD has become recognized as a highly heterogeneous dis- ease. To date, over 50 causative genes have been discovered, with a family and/or population-specific range of mutations found among patients. Despite the high number of genes associated with PCD pathogenesis, the genetic cause of the disease in approximately 30% of patients remains unclear. Therefore, it is important to search for new candidate PCD genes and to investigate their role in motile cilia biology.” ~ Perspectives for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Zuzanna Bukowy-Bieryllo, Michal Witt and Ewa Zietkiewicz
