Airways have a built in mechanism to protect themselves from the cold, and that is to retract. This airway retraction can cause discomfort and stop secretions in their tracks. That’s not what you want. You want to mobilize the secretions and induce coughing to help remove the secretions the the airway completely. So exercise some precautions and get outside and e that fresh powder. But above all remember to cough, cough it up and spit it out. Remember airway hygiene is an important part of primary ciliary dyskinesia care.

Airway clearance doesn’t always have to be scheduled or timed just right. Taking advantage of unusual opportunities to squeeze in a little extra coughing is very important in keeping your PCD loved one’s airways clear. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of coughing. Activities like chores that could also turn into fun can induce coughing.

See I was brought up that coughing was bad and something to be hidden. It should never be done in front of people. Coughing also signaled that I needed to stop what I was doing and sit down. Honestly that was virtually the wrong thing to do for a person with PCD. Even some of my doctors were in agreement that coughing needed stopped, stifled, and signaled I was over exerting myself. In PCD we retain our cough clearance, so in essence coughing is the right thing to do always. Coughing is good grooming in PCD care. We need to cough. If your PCDer is coughing don’t cringe, celebrate and encourage coughing. Coughing helps keeps our airways clear of debris and bacteria that can cause pulmonary infections. Better out than in, remember that old saying. Cough, cough, cough, and more coughing.

Chores that turn into playtime get done faster and encourages people to repeat the chore next time. And come on, who hasn’t played in the leafs while cleaning them up for winter? Play in the leaves and get coughing!
