Daily task 5. Hydrate according to your healthcare plan. (Consult your primary care, cardiologist, and PCD specialist for recommendations on hydration.)

The fifth daily task in the Turtle On 100 Day challenge is to hydrate according to your healthcare plan. In PCD because our cilia are broken, the cilia do not become stressed under increased mucus volume, or thick viscosity of mucus itself. In a healthy person when cilia are stressed, the cilia signal the CFTR channel to regulate the balance of salt and water across the cell membranes thereby thinning the mucus to aid in the cilia sweeping the mucus up and out of the airways. This is the PCD connection to cystic fibrosis and what leads to thick sticky mucus in PCD. Staying hydrated when you have PCD helps to keep our mucus thin, and that makes it easier for us to get out mucus with our airway clearance techniques. Proper hydration is great for everyone regardless if they have PCD or not. However exercise caution in hydrating too much, especially is you suffer from other health conditions, including PCD. Be sure to consult your physician for the proper hydration plan for your unique overall health picture. Do you have what it takes?
